Mike Carroll - Songwriter

The Songwriter

Mike Carroll started writing melodic songs over 15 year's ago, first for the band Spike, then on to Hit House, a production Company created by Mike, Steve Hillier and Tony Hay. The idea was to produce a catalogue of pop song's preformed by various artists for publishing. All tracks were recorded and Produced by Ed Poole.

Mike (a vocalist in his own right) then decided to use the songs for his first Solo Album Escape from the Rooftops, followed by Gravity. Next came Invasion 2011 followed by his recent collection self penned tracks Simply called Songs

More recently Mike has self penned and recorded 3 new tracks with Ed Poole; 67 Mustang (featuring Snake Davis on horns and Sax solo), and I just want to see you again.A song written for Rely for life Charity event.

Mike's Songwriting and recording are on an on-going adventure.

And thanks to all who helped, especially the brilliant Ed Poole and my wonderful wife Cathy who encourages me to carry on this crazy dream of mine.

Invasion

Well here we are, five years after the 'Gravity' album and facing yet another mid-life crisis: kids all growing up, still trying to 'Escape the Rooftops', and unable to resist knocking out a few tunes to make sense of it all.

Which i suppose is what 'Invasion' is all about: a collection of songs mostly written over the past few years and recorded in a style that reflects where life's at right now.

Hence the blend of relaxed, west coast country groove with observations looking back, and contemplations looking forward. not too loud, not too fast; not too clever, not too daft: just right.

I like it. hope you do too.

Ain't The Same Thing

Very strong vocal and instrumentation. Arrangement lets the vocal shine.
Powerful lyrics. This one has tons of potential. Nice job.

Your verses are outstanding! Emotionally Powerful, honest, and effective.
Chorus is right on target. What's not the same? - The love I get from you.

Price you Pay

Michael, Overall a very melodic and meaningful piece of work. The decidedly pop melody seems irresistible to this listener, and I found my self singing right along in no time. This almost has a latter-day Jackson Browne sound to it - no small compliment. Really nice and commercial song, for the A/C/pop market.

I really like this infectious melody. Nice flow and content. Michael, You seem to know how to structure everything just right. Great musical and lyrical flow in this song. It's very easy to listen to, and to sing along with as well.

Gravity

Gravity, the seductive new CD from Londoners ChoonSmiffs, features hit writing and singing talents Mike Carroll and Steve Hillier at their most accomplished. This, their second release, is on a par with legends Steely Dan, whose sophisticated style Gravity pays tribute to with several originals born to become your new soundtrack.

The CD is full of hits, rich with their own signature mix of Mike's lead vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitar, with Steve's sizzling electric and acoustic guitars. Saxy vocals by Mike, Steve, and Ed Poole remind me of Boz Scaggs' solo albums from the early '70s. I've never said that about anyone.

Three picks from this pop rock / hot jazz CD jump out with Last Night in L.A., a number one funky jazz rock smash, as if The Crusaders met Steely Dan at Ronnie Scott's. Co-written, with a deep, get it on groove, it's tied with Gravity, and Jewel for the best lyrics.

Gravity, written by Mike, defines timeless vocals and lyrics, raised by architects of your soul, blessed with the best melody and harmony since Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks. This song of erotic magic and mystery is unforgettable. The beauty of love's truth can break your heart.

Jewel, by Steve, is "quirkily jazzrock" writes the liner notes. It wins my vote for best vocals, solos, lyrics and production. This is another groove lament for the ages, à la Joe Jackson's world of Night and Day.

"Writers of finely crafted pop songs" their business card promises. These and several other tracks, Guaranteed Love, Best Days, and Price You Pay, stay with you for days. Gravity is a CD of new favorites from the group that raises pop jazz to an art you want more of now.

Writing, playing, singing and production deliver a rare treat of passion and poise, expertly produced by Ed Poole. He's also featured on bass, keyboard, electric and acoustic guitars, with Richard Pardy mystical on tenor sax. After repeated listenings, I still savor the benefits of a deft balance that showcases each musician's solo affairs.

So you are now free to fall in love with life. The most entertaining, surreal liner notes since Miles Davis' Bitches Brew reveal the mysteries of each song's personality and theme. You can skip half of English lit: that's how much world savvy the band renders supremely through love's journeys of passion, purpose or pain.

So much pure emotional enjoyment. You can't meet better artists and new friends. Send for several copies of Gravity, and Escape from the Rooftops, their hit debut CD released in 2003. Ask for them signed; they're perfect gifts. You'll be back for more.

What's going on

Hi Michael, I really dig your music! The tracks sound terrific - I applaud the musicianship, producing/arranging prowess!!! The vocals are wonderfully smooth with tight harmonies that are really well arranged. I hear moments of "Steely Dan" here! Lyrically you tell concise, visual stories with strong hook lines. Good voice and I love the groove!!

Great intro - good groove, good horn arrangement and backing vocals good variety in arrangement - nice gaps, very nice words.
